Breckenridge began as a booming mining town, the first permanent settlement on the western slope of the Continental Divide. The scenic Breckenridge National Historic District could serve as a prelude of the big things ahead for the nature lover. Skiers, cross-country enthusiasts, and snowboarders flock to Breckenridge Ski Resort, on the west side of the town and spread over four mountains. There are over 2,000 skiable acres, with 140 trails that can be reached by over 25 chair lifts.

Breckenridge's early skiing reputation was based on its catering to beginner and intermediate skiers. It still is the ideal place to hone your skiing skills. The resort also has a women's learn-to-ski program, one of few in the nation that is taught by women for women. The Dillon Reservoir (the Dillon Lake) is a hot spot for pontoon boating, sailing, pleasure craft cruises, canoing and kayaking. Anglers are spoiled for choices of fishing holes. South Platte, Eagle, and Blue Rivers all teem with fish. Breckenridge is also a golfers' paradise.
