About Iowa Iowa is located in north-central United States, bordered by Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The Des Moines River flows across Iowa from northwest to southeast. The Mississippi River forms the eastern boundary of Iowa, while the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River define portions of Iowa's western boundary. All the rivers can provide exciting times for nature and outdoor lovers. The Sauk, Fox, Iowa, and Sioux Indians lived in the region when French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette arrived in 1673. From the late 1830s until the end of the American Civil War, the Des Moines River was the main commercial channel for central Iowa. Vacation destinations in Iowa include Clear Lake and Okoboji. The Ledges State Park offers many outdoor adventures. Situated near the city of Boone on the banks of the Des Moines River, the State Park offers many hiking trails. The Ledges State Park is made up of woodlands that consists mainly of basswood, maple, oak, and hickory trees. Prairie and clearings are also located throughout the park. Canoing and fishing opportunities abound as the Des Moines River runs through the west end of the park. Modern campsites, as well as those with only the bare necessities are available. Most sites are on a first come, first serve basis but you can still manage to reserve a site. Stone bridges are the highlights of the State Park.
