The lesser-known part of Downeast is truly spectacular. Schoodic Point's granite cliffs stand in mighty defiance of the Atlantic Ocean, and flocks of seagulls play in the spray and wind. On a clear day, you can enjoy amazing views of Mt. Desert Island across Frenchman Bay. Visit Prospect Harbor and Gouldsboro in Downeast is where the Bartlett Estate Winery is. This winery makes apple, blueberry, and pear wines. Cherryfield, known, ironically, as the 'Blueberry Capital of the World,' is a stately village made up of fine old homes and a park along the Narraguagus River. In the historic town of Machias in Downeast, vacationers can visit the Burnham Tavern, where the first naval battle of the American Revolution in 1775 was planned. The lighthouse at West Quoddy Head in Downeast is at the eastern-most point in the United States. You can take a ferry to nearby Deer Island - and catch a glimpse of the Old Sow Whirlpool en route. |
