About Vacation Rentals in Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island in North Carolina has much to offer as a coastal vacation destination. Bald Head Island is located about two nautical miles off the coast of historic Southport, and is accessible only by ferry. One reason why you'd experience a different atmosphere from an urban setting is that no automobiles are allowed in the island! A day's activities at Bald Head Island could include fishing, swimming, boating, golfing, tennis, hors riding, and cycling.

'Old Baldy' is Bald Head Island's traditional welcoming point and home to the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. The lighthouse was built in 1817, and once guarded ships from running aground on the 'Frying Pan Shoals' which reach out into the Atlantic for 20 miles, and can be found at depths of 8-15 feet.

The Bald Head Island Club provides you a great shopping extravaganza. The Club is home to the Bald Head Island Golf Course. The course was designed by George Cobb, former consultant at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia. It was desinged and built to blend with the surroundings. Bald Head Island's beaches are among the best in the area, according to Dr. Beach himself, Dr. Stephen Leatherman. Bald Head Island's beaches were among the top 20 in the country in 2000. East, West, and South Beach all have a gentle slope into the ocean, making them ideal for families with small children. Conditions for swimming here are ideal, with the expansive beaches brushed by rather calm waves. You could spot bottlenose dolphins from the beaches.

Bald Head Island is also a haven for nature enthusiasts. Programs throughout the year are sponsored by a Nature Conservancy. These programs are designed to educate the visitors about the natural elements of the island, and guide visitors to the best vantage points for viewing the local flora and fauna. The Kent Mitchell Nature Trail is quite a popular trail on the island. It winds its way through a forested area of tidal salt marsh. Being right in the middle of the largest migration pattern on the east coast, Bald Head Island has on offer white ibis, pelicans, bald eagles, and other avian guests.
